The demand for dental assistants is predicted to keep increasing over the years. Fortunately, it’s never been easier to start this career thanks to dental assistant training programs! The field of dentistry is quite large and has numerous aspects and specializations to it. One of these is pediatric dentistry, which focuses on the unique oral healthcare needs of children. Could becoming a pediatric dental assistant be a good choice for you? Here are three essential traits you’ll need to succeed in this meaningful role.

1.) A Passion for Working with Kids

First and foremost, you’ll need to be good with kids if you want to work in pediatric dentistry! Working with children requires an entirely different approach than that for adults. You’ll need to be patient as you explain each step you’re taking, and calm as you help them relax during their visit, all while weaving some fun into their appointment. A dental assistant will oftentimes be the person in charge of helping younger patients feel comfortable and confident as they settle into the examination chair.

2.) An Understanding of Children’s Dentistry

The next crucial component of a pediatric dental assistant is their knowledge base. Children’s dentistry is similar to general dentistry, but it is also significantly different. For one, primary teeth are far more susceptible to cavities than permanent teeth. Plus, since they’re so much smaller and not a permanent fixture of the mouth, they can be challenging to work on. That’s why children’s dentistry focuses on services that will help prevent tooth decay in the first place, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants.

3.) The Heart of a Teacher

Another key part of a pediatric dental assistant’s role is that of a teacher. While adults have had plenty of time to learn how to brush, floss, and maintain their oral health, it’s a brand-new learning experience for kids! As the dental assistant, you’ll help teach them the basics of how to brush and floss. Depending on the child’s age, you may also need to teach the child’s parent or guardian about how to care for their little one’s teeth. You’ll need to model how the actual motions of brushing and flossing work and clearly explain why routine oral healthcare is so important.

Not just anyone can be a pediatric dental assistant! However, this fulfilling career will let you play an important role in helping a child develop great dental habits that will last a lifetime.
