1. Routine Preventive Care
This is why most people come to the dentist in the first place, and a large part of a dental assistant’s day involves preventive care. You’ll help prepare patients and treatment rooms for cleanings, take and process X-rays, and assist in preventive treatments like fluoride or sealants. You may also aid the dentist during routine exams, chart findings, and ultimately make sure the patient feels comfortable throughout their visit.
2. Restorative Treatments
Dental assistants also play a key role during restorative work, such as fillings, crowns, and bridges. You’ll prepare the treatment area, sterilize instruments, gather dental materials, and assist the dentist throughout the procedure. Depending on your training, you may even take on expanded duties, like placing temporary fillings or polishing restorations.
3. Oral Surgery & Specialty Procedures
Some dental assistants also support oral surgery procedures, such as tooth extractions or assisting with dental implant placement. This might involve preparing surgical instruments, monitoring patients during the procedure, and providing post-operative care instructions. These moments call for a calm, reassuring presence, since patients are often more anxious during these types of visits!
4. Emergency Dentistry
You’ll also find yourself helping out with emergency dentistry, and in these situations, patients truly rely on you not only to provide gentle care, but also reassurance during the actual treatment and useful information for their aftercare. That said, patients might come in with tooth pain and need a root canal, they might be distressed about bleeding gums, or they could be dealing with a knocked-out tooth. Your dentist will rely on your help in all of these situations.
