For many dental assistants entering the field, their first day is perhaps one of the most intimidating experiences that they must go through. These first days can be full of surprises, whether it’s something shockingly unexpected or downright hilarious. In any case, knowing a little bit about what to expect can put any doubts you have to rest and allow you to enter your new career with rock-solid confidence. Here are a few important things to keep in mind as you kick off your new career as a dental assistant so that you can conquer your first day in the office!

Tip #1. Always Read Instructions & Follow Directions

This is great advice in general, but any time you’re about to use a new product, or piece of equipment, or assist with a certain aspect of treatment, it’s crucial that you always read any present instructions or adhere to any office protocol concerning how to go about things. There’s also no harm in doing your own outside research, so long as it’s from a trusted source—this can help you to build up your confidence in your skills, as well as your credibility with patients. Of course, it’s always wise to simply ask your dentist if you have any specific questions; they’d much rather you do things correctly, after all!

Tip #2. Stay Humble & Eager to Learn

Your dentist is an expert on all things relating to oral health and the treatment of patients, so you should never hesitate to use them as a resource. As a new assistant, it’s fine to acknowledge that you at least know the basics; however, it’s also important to recognize that every office and doctor does things differently, uses various products and offers a range of services. By staying humble and open to learning new things, you’ll ensure that there aren’t any hiccups on day one as you quickly begin learning the ropes.

Tip #3. Keep a Smile on Your Face—Literally & Figuratively

Virtually all dental assistants agree that this is the most important tip—keep a positive attitude, and always try to be a part of the solution, rather than a part of the problem. There are a large number of possible situations that could unfold during your first day, but approaching any challenge with a smile on your face and a problem-solving attitude will ensure that your dentist and the patients alike are impressed.
